March 31, 2013 2200 hours
The protest committee convened at 1800 hours March 31, 2013 at the
WVYC clubhouse.
The protest committee consisted of Paul Hansen, Charles Hansen and
Bev Parslow.
Results have been adjusted accordingly as per direction from the
protest committee.
Their findings:
- Tiger Lily - the protest by the race committee was withdrawn.
It was determined that the boat was properly equipped.
- Zulu - the protest by the race committee was upheld.
It was determined that there was a significant safety equipment
infraction.
The boat has received a score of DSQ.
- Wingaway - the protest by the race committee was upheld.
It was determined that there were communication protocol violations
which resulted in 30 minutes being added to their elapsed time.
March 30, 2013 2300 hours
The race committee has posted a notice of protests March
30, 2013 2300 hours on the official notice board in the
WVYC clubhouse lobby and here on the website (access
by clicking here). There are 3 protests to be heard in accordance
with provisions of the Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions.
Those parties involved have been notified via land line phone with
messages left where personal contact could not be made. Two of the
protests involve alleged safety violations and one involves alleged
communications protocol infractions.
March 30, 2013 0700 hours
Short Course: most boats have rounded Halibut Bank and
are on average 1/2 way to the finish line. The tracker shows most
of these boats moving at about 4 kts.
A few boats have retired.
Medium course boats are mainly enroute to Halibut Bank from Entrance
Island or have rounded Halibut Bank and enroute to the finish line.
Long Course boats are largley grouped between Halibut Bank and Bellenas
having rounded Sisters Islets in the night and working to round
Halibut Bank.

Wind reported at West 4 kts at Entrance Island.
Wind reported at calm at Halibut Bank.
Wind reported at WNW 9kts at Ballenans Islands
Wind reported at WNW 12 kts at Sisters Islets.
March 29, 2013 2100 hours
Short Course: 11 boats have rounded Entrance Island
Wind reported at West 4 kts at Entrance Island.
Wind reported at calm at Halibut Bank.
Wind reported at NNW 2 kts at Sisters Islets.
March 29, 2013 2010 hours
The short course fleet has compressed near Entrance Island,
their first mark rounding. Light airs are keeping them in close
company.
Medium course boats are scattered about the Strait a fair distance
east of Ballenas, their first mark rounding.
Long course boats are closely grouped southeast of Lasqueti Island
in their struggle up the Strait towards their first mark round,
Sisters Islets.
March 29, 2013 1415 hours The race committe reported
from the Seasoan Tug "Cutlass", that all races were started
on time from the Dundarave Pier.

The Inshore race boats sailed a course to the Point Grey bell buoy,
to Kits barge buoy and then to POINT Atkinson, They are due to begin
finishing within the half hour.

March 27, 2013 (Wednesday) Update
from the Race Chairman
With just under a couple of days to go we have cracked
the 70 boat mark for race registrations, great news to see so many
attracted to this great race, good luck to all of you.
A reminder to have your team’s paperwork filled out and submitted
to the WVYC sailing director Alex Dumond prior to registration confirmationon
the 29th. Documents include your current PHRF rating, Proof of Insurance
and signed Crew List.
A quick note to our US based teams – Royal Vancouver YC has
graciously allowed us to use their main dock at their Jericho facility
to be used as a customs dock. Customs clearance procedures will
be identical to any other facility but you can inform Canadian Customs
you are entering the country at the RVanYC Jericho Dock.
For any of the larger vessels with restricted entry to the WVYC
Yacht Club basin, we have arranged for some select moorage to be
available at Sewell’s Marina in Horseshoe Bay. We have up
to 120 ft of dock space available on their seasonal docks which
are located about a 5 minute drive from the WVYC– contact
Sewell’s directly at 604-921-3474 if interested.

March 21, 2013 - Notice of Race amended
The long course has been modified to eliminate the rounding of Bellenas
Islands after rounding Sisters Island. See main page for link to

Ross MacDonald of North Sails (Olympic Champion and veteran Straits
Sailor) presented Southern Straits Tactics and Strategy.
The presentation was augmented by material provided by WVYC member
Doug Wardrop (many Straits races under his belt).

Sea Power led a discussion on marine diesel maintenance
and preparation for Southern Straits
Blast Sailing was also be on hand to present the 2013 Van Isle 360
and provide a safety gear demonstration.
March 4, 2013 (Monday) - The
organizing Committee and North Sails are pleased to announce the
winner of the early bird draw. Gunnar Jonsson (Havoc) of VRC registered
February 15 to race the Medium Course. He will receive a $500 gift
certificate from North Sails. Congratulations Gunnar.
February 1, 2013 (Friday) -
The Vancouver Rowing Club will co-host with the West Vancouver Yacht
Club , an informational session on the Southern
Straits Classic Race.
The venue for this event is the Trophy Lounge at the Vancouver Rowing
Club.
It will commence at 1900 hours on Friday February 1, 2013.
Please feel free to come join us for a brief presentation and informal
chat.
Thanks to the Vancouver Rowing Club for hosting this event. Close
to 80 people attended with quite a few Straits virgins among them.

SAFETY AT SEA: CLASS 13 - February 23-24, 2013 scheduled
BC Sailing's ISAF-recognized Safety At Sea course will
take place once again in West Vancouver on the weekend of the 23rd
and 24th of February.
Additional courses are not guaranteed and are based on residual
demand so please register as soon as possible to avoid missing out.

Notice of Race Amendment #1 Published
Sections 6.4, 6.5 and 6.6 (Long, Medium and Short courses)
have been altered so that all boats round the Halibut Bank mark
in the same manner and to eliminate the “buttonhook”.

The Race Committee is pleased to announce that the Notice

Attention all out-of-town participants with trailer capability
and vessels weighing under 10,000 lbs
The West Vancouver Yacht Club's dry moorage wharf is fitted with
a 5 ton motorized hoist. This new facility has raised the racing
profile at WVYC with the addition of several new vessels in a highly
competitive fleet.
Please contact the club to enquire about using this new facility
to launch and haul your vessel for this year's Southern Straits
